Watch Out Europe and World!

Yes, here comes a little known Spanish football club called Girona FC. And they are damn good! Which is why they sit (tonight) at the top of La Liga after beating my beloved Barcelona FC in spectacular fashion, and hence they passed Real Madrid in the standings by two points. I am so happy I watched this remarkably exciting game! Here are the highlights. Let me know if you have any technical issues playing these highlights:

The style of play manager Míchel Sánchez has his squad displaying and winning is honestly beautiful art and so very easy on the eyes! Once Girona got into their game, WOW was it impressive. And EPL fans as well as (eventually) UEFA Champions League fans, no surprise, Míchel Sánchez is a colleague and under-study of Pep Guardiola football. Míchel is already in the spotlight of City Football Group to possibly/probably replace Pep when he leaves or retires from managing Manchester City. Here is a good 8-min video-clip from YouTube’s The Purist Football vlog:

Footballing friends, take notice. Girona FC is a force to be reckoned with in European football as well as La Liga if the smaller Catalonian club can retain their best players and/or manager for at least a period of time before Europe’s richest clubs come calling for all their talent.

At the start of La Liga this year I thought their fantastic start would soon fade and they’d fall into the middle of the table. I’ve changed my mind after witnessing what they did to my Barcelona. I was more than big-eyed shocked, but they deserve to be at the top, yes… above my Barca and above Real Madrid. They might even become Spanish Champions the way they’re all locked-in, understanding all their individual roles and fully invested in Míchel’s system.

  1. Similar event happening down our way. (Red Bull) Bragantino (from Bragança, which is a nearby town in our valley) burst into first series this year and came in 5th. Superb team, who play as a team. Keep an eye out for them.

  2. One season wonders Prof. Every year the top leagues throw up a surprise team. Remember Leicester City? (Now in the EFL) Last year in the Bundesliga Union Berlin? (this season struggling against relegation) And to a lesser extent Napoli in SerieA (again at the other end of their table).

Let them enjoy their moment of glory, the big boys will soon clear them out.

    • Good valid points Brian, yes. But my hunch, and I could be wrong, is that if ownership of Girona and Míchel can stick around there for maybe 3-4 seasons(?) and keep key, highly talented players—away from noted BIG Euro clubs—I feel they’ll be a joy to watch. 🙂

      Time will tell, huh?
